On Saturday, almost the entire Ivory Goat Gaming Group managed a rare reunion, with members in attendance from as far afield as the US and Ottawa. To mark the occasion, the Rebel Alliance decided to launch a major assault on the latest Imperial Death Star.
This took some time to organize. Flying a starship isn’t all glamour, you know. The Rebels also had the aid of a massive Canis lupus familiaris (“Big black Labrador space dog”), which devoured one of the Imperial Royal Guard TIE Interceptors during set-up.
The scenario required that the Rebels exit the map carrying torpedoes, with which they would presumably attack the inevitable exhaust port that all Imperial weapons designers seems required to include in all their genocidal weapon designs. The Imperial forces would win if they destroyed one of the two large (but unarmed) command and control ships accompanying the Rebel fleet. The Death Star was also defended by turbolasers, while a powerful ion blaster provided covering fire for the attackers.
First blood went to the Imperial Forces in Sector Bravo. Luke Skywalker bravely pressed on alone.
However, in Sector Alpha, the rebels–led here by Wedge Antilles—enjoyed success after success, destroying several ships led by Imperial Wing Commanders Brynen and Rotter.
In the centre many of the Imperial ships spent several minutes tied up trying to avoid collisions with their own forces. Bobba Fett was less lucky, however: Slave-1 was rammed by a large rebel GR-75 transport ship and destroyed. The force of the explosion was such that it momentarily blurred long-range sensors.
The Imperial commanders had feared that the rebel pilots would simply charge forward at high speed. Fortunately they spent precious time trying to evade the initial fire from the Death Star’s defensive turbolasers.
A huge Corellian Corvette piloted by Captain Fisher attempted to ram an Imperial Lambda-class Shuttle. However Darth Cartier showed impressive flying skills, managing to swerve aside at the very last minute.
By this time, however, Imperial turbolasers had begun to whittle down Rebel shields and damage many of the Rebel star fighters. Led by Darth Carpini, the Imperial ships counterattacked in Sector Alpha, all but destroying the first wave of rebel assault ships‚ including Wedge Antilles.
This came at high cost, however, with Darth Carpini killed in the process. (Fortunately, as his clone later noted, at the Darth level you get outstanding Death and Dismemberment insurance, complete with full replacement coverage.)
Although the Rebel players destroyed 12 Imperial ships at a loss of only 4 ships of their own, the game ended with neither side having fulfilled any of its victory conditions. It was hence was called as a draw.
